Overnight bus to Korea

My visa was nearing its expiration date. So off with me to Korea. I live in Japan and I want to renew my temporary visitor visa by going to Korea and back. The research I've done puts me into a mixed bag. Anything lawful here seems to be kept secret from the general public. Different governmental bodies have different governmental ideas. I have no idea how this will turn out.
